Within the framework of the Innovation Week organized by CONCYTEC (July 3 – 7), a meeting entitled “Intellectual property and innovation in health” was held on July 5, followed by the workshop “How to deposit and absorb a technology in the WHO C-TAP platform”. The activities were organized by the National Institute of Health in collaboration with Acción Internacional para la Salud of Peru and INNOVARTE of Chile. The C-TAP is a World Health Organization (WHO) Pooled Access to Technology Access Fund for HIV/AIDS-19, a kind of bank of technologies related to diagnostic tests, vaccines, treatments and other tools that are available for scaling up production and improving supply to the populations that require them.

The first event was attended by Erika Dueñas from the Intellectual Property Office of the WHO and Gaspar Morgado, Vice-Rector of Technological Innovation of the University of Chile. The speaker shared information on how patents can affect access to medicines, vaccines, treatments and diagnostics, as well as the efforts made by the WHO during the pandemic. Gaspar Morgado presented the experiences and work being carried out by the University of Chile in technology transfer, highlighting the results achieved with licenses granted to the private sector.

The second event was a workshop aimed at Peruvian researchers and scientists and included the participation of Luis Villarroel, director of INNOVARTE, who spoke about the incentives and commitments to use licensing platforms such as C-TAP. José Maira Vidal from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) also participated and shared the experience of placing a technology in the C-TAP. Gaspar Morgado then showed the experience of the University of Chile, which is in the culmination phase of placing a COVID-19 diagnostic test on the C-TAP platform. The workshop was enriched by the participation of the attendees who were encouraged to take advantage of the C-TAP platform.
